How to switch payment processors

Switching processors affects funding, refunds, disputes, equipment and integrations. Review the existing agreement before moving the first transaction.

Separate processing from POS software

Some POS products require a specific processing arrangement; others support certified integrations. Confirm the exact platform, gateway and terminal compatibility before assuming you can change processors without changing software.

Review the current obligations

Read renewal dates, notice requirements, early termination charges, equipment leases and token/data export provisions. Software and hardware agreements may survive a processing cancellation. Ask for written confirmation of the cancellation process.

Approve and test the new account

Complete underwriting and receive credentials before scheduling a cutover. Test sales, refunds, reporting, batch submission and deposits. Recurring tokens and gift-card balances need a separate migration plan.

Example: do not lose refund access

A merchant switching before a busy season may still receive returns on prior purchases. Ask the old provider how refunds and disputes will be handled and how long access should remain open. Keep transaction records according to applicable requirements.

Close out deliberately

Reconcile the final batches, confirm device-return requirements and track the first deposits from the new account. Liftoff can help coordinate the plan, but cannot waive another provider’s contractual obligations.

Common merchant questions

Can I switch without replacing my terminal?

Only if the device, ownership and certification support the new arrangement. Confirm the model and provider compatibility.

Do payment tokens transfer automatically?

No. Portability depends on security, provider cooperation and agreement terms; recurring customers may need to authorize a new arrangement.
