Retail POS buyer’s guide
Choose retail POS around your catalog, receiving, returns and sales channels. Start with inventory requirements before choosing the counter hardware.
Catalog structure comes first
Document SKUs, variants, barcodes, units and vendor records. A boutique needs size/color relationships; a liquor store may need packs and cases; a convenience store needs departments and specialized restrictions.
Test the full inventory cycle
Demonstrate receiving, a stock count, sale, return and transfer. Ask how negative inventory, duplicate barcodes and damaged merchandise are handled. Multi-store reporting is different from shared inventory control.
Online and store sales
Check ecommerce synchronization, pickup, shipping, refunds and gift-card redemption. Confirm which system is the source of truth for inventory and what happens when updates are delayed.
Example: one item across channels
Create a jacket in multiple sizes and colors. Receive stock, reserve an online order, sell a unit in-store and process an exchange. Then inspect the available quantities, sales report and accounting export.
Match equipment and commercial terms
Evaluate scanners, printers, drawers, customer displays and mobile checkout against supported models. Clover, Genius and Heartland Retail are current catalog candidates. Compare processing and software costs, app dependencies and data-export rights.
Common merchant questions
Can a payment terminal manage inventory?
Not necessarily. A payment-only terminal and a retail inventory system serve different roles.
Can a retail POS run fuel dispensers?
Do not assume so. Fuel-specific equipment, controller compatibility and certified payment integrations require separate specialist validation.
